NC State’s Division of Enrollment Management and Services (EMAS) fulfills a critical role for the university as the steward of student record data. This responsibility entails ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of student record data on behalf of the university’s 36,000+ actively enrolled students, and many more alumni. By successfully doing this, EMAS empowers the university to ethically, and accurately, use student record data to make sound decisions in pursuit of its overall mission.
Essential Job Duties
The Data Specialist position is part of the Office of Registration & Records (R&R) within Enrollment Management and Services. The person in this position will be looked to as a leading expert on student record data and reporting. This will require developing an understanding of student record data in NC State’s Student Information System (SIS) and the various R&R processes that generate it. The Data Specialist will be surrounded by data team colleagues and R&R staff that will help develop the knowledge to become a student record data expert at the university.
The Data Specialist will support the following efforts:
- Develop and maintain student record reporting for the Office of Registration & Record so it can effectively provide services to students and the university.
- Interface with various campus stakeholders to understand student record data needs and provide appropriate reporting solutions.
- Contribute to the documentation of student record data to ensure common knowledge of what the data represents and how it is generated.
- Serve as a leading expert on various campus-wide initiatives that require expertise on student record data, such as the UNC System Student Data Mart and enterprise data initiatives.
- Develop and maintain Student Information System (SIS) queries and dashboards that allow for automated student record data reporting to the campus.
- Participate in data quality initiatives that ensure student record data is accurately captured and ready for use by the campus.
- Lead short to medium-term analytics projects that require working cross functionally.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s degree OR
- Bachelor’s degree with zero – two years of relevant experience OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience

- Data Security & Confidentiality: Ability to follow established security procedures and manage sensitive institutional data with the highest level of confidentiality.
- Collaboration & Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, fostering collaboration with colleagues and campus partners.
- Data Integrity & Accuracy: Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure the accuracy and integrity of institutional data through diligent oversight and adherence to data management best practices.
- Consultation & Stakeholder Support: Proven ability to collaborate with campus partners to assess and fulfill data and reporting needs.
- Time Management & Prioritization: Capacity to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher Education Experience: Previous experience working in a university or college environment, with an understanding of its unique data and operational needs.
- Data Visualization Experience: Experience developing data visualizations using tools such as SAS Visual Analytics, Tableau, or Power BI.
- Analytics Programming Experience: Proficiency with analytics-related programming languages such as SQL or SAS.
- Data Querying & Transformation: Demonstrated experience querying and transforming data to produce actionable insights.
